Bravery And The Age Of Being A Liberal Snowflake
When was the last time you saw someone toss this at you “All you softy liberals want the government to be the parents” — maybe it was a parent, or uncle or maybe a grandparent; maybe it was a vice principal of your high school… maybe you’ve been wanting something to say to yourself, in your head, while they’re saying that at Thanksgiving…
To them and a handful of others I say:
Government has been around longer than any one of us, seen more, weathered more, and it will be here long after we (millennials) are dust whether we like it or not. Like our children, a government is a component of our immortality as a people.
So, like our children, our government is in a unique position to see past our personal horizons; the framers of the constitution knew this (and they still remain some of the best game designers I’ve ever known). I know this is a liberal view, but I’d like to remind you that liberals did a few things we all enjoy now…
“Liberals ended slavery. They got women the right to vote. They got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation.
Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals also created Medicare and passed the Clean Air Act AND the Clean Water Act. What did republicans do? They opposed all of these things. Every single one.”
Our parents haven’t lived long enough to do all these things, but the government has. I agree that the government shouldn’t read my kid’s their bedtime stories (just as much as I believe Alexa probably shouldn’t either).
…but I think the government can help people who work three jobs maybe have one job, so that everyone can read to their kids before they sleep. That isn’t being a socialist, that’s being a liberal, and it is brave.
I trod out this thinking because its not about who is a democrat and who is a republican, its about acknowledging that life is inherently unfair, but in a civilized society, we the people can and should be there to ease some of life’s harder truths. We owe it to our children.
So, what do you say next time someone tries to fling “liberal snowlfake” at you? Tell them thanks and give them a genuine, loving smile.
